The Dayton Hockey Foundation has announced the schedule of games for the 2007 Lefty McFadden College Hockey Invitational to be played at the E.J. Nutter Center on Friday and Saturday, October 12-13.
This year’s ‘Lefty’ features The Ohio State University Buckeyes, the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the University of Wisconsin Badgers, and the Mercyhurst College (Erie, PA) Lakers. The tournament is named for Dayton sports and community icon and “Father of Dayton Hockey,” Ed ‘Lefty’ McFadden.
The ‘Lefty’ will start out by featuring one of the top early season match-ups in the country when Notre Dame and Wisconsin kickoff the tournament with a 5:05 PM (EST) game on Friday, October 13. Notre Dame was the 2006-07 Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) champion under Coach Jeff Jackson and spent much of the season atop the Division I college hockey polls. Wisconsin was the NCAA “Frozen Four” champion in 2006. The Badgers are coached by Mike Eaves.
In the evening’s second game, host Ohio State will face-off with Mercyhurst at 8:05 PM (EST). The Buckeyes have been to the NCAA tournament five times under Head Coach John Markell including three consecutive trips from 2003-05. The Buckeyes went to the “Frozen Four” in 1998, tournament losing to runner-up Boston College in the semi-finals. Under Head Coach Rick Gotkin, the Lakers have been among the winningest Division I hockey programs since 2000 averaging nearly 20 wins a season.
On Saturday October 13, the consolation game of the ‘Lefty’ will be played at 4:35 PM (EST). The face-off for the championship game is slated for a 7:35 PM (EST) start.
“This stands to be one of, if not the most exciting ‘Lefty’ since the tournament began in 2002,” says tournament co-chair Bob Brogan. “The games of the first night coupled with the potential match-ups of the second night promise to provide hockey fans in Dayton with quite possibly the best early season college hockey in the country.”
Since 2002, the Lefty McFadden College Hockey Invitational has brought many of the best college hockey teams to Dayton, OH. Past participants have included, Miami University, Boston University, University of Michigan, Air Force, North Dakota and Bowling Green. 2003 ‘Lefty’ participant University of Denver Pioneers won the NCAA “Frozen Four” in 2004 and 2005. The Michigan State Spartans, which skated in the 2005 ‘Lefty’ won the 2007 “Frozen Four” this past spring.
